How to Raise Dart Frog Tadpoles and Froglets: A Complete Care Guide
Raising dart frog tadpoles and froglets is one of the most rewarding โ and nerve-wracking โ parts of keeping poison dart frogs. The sheer size of newly hatched tadpoles, the microscopic food requirements, and the delicate transition from water to land can feel overwhelming, especially for first-time breeders. But with the right knowledge and setup, it's absolutely manageable. Stage 1: The Egg Stage
So your dart frogs finally laid eggs โ congratulations! Now what?
Egg appearance varies by species. Some species lay all-black eggs, others lay white eggs, and some start white and gradually turn black as they develop. The key thing to watch for is mold โ fuzzy white or grey growth on the eggs is a clear sign they're infertile or have failed. Healthy, developing eggs will remain firm and show visible changes over time.
Our approach is to leave eggs in place until they either show clear signs of development or mold. Unnecessary handling early on can damage developing embryos, so patience is key.
Moving Eggs to Water
Once eggs are showing development, it's time to move them to water. How you do this depends on where they were laid.
Eggs on a leaf or leaf litter: Carefully remove the leaf with the eggs still attached and place it in an 8oz deli cup. Use a pipette or turkey baster to add a small amount of spring water โ just enough to touch the sides of the eggs. Do not fully submerge the eggs, as this can suffocate the developing tadpoles.

Eggs in a film canister: Remove the canister and place it in an 8oz deli cup or directly into a 10-gallon tank at a slight angle. The eggs should rest on the bottom of the canister. Add a small amount of spring water as above.

Eggs being carried by parents: Sometimes you won't notice eggs until you see a parent carrying tadpoles on their back. In this case, place a small shallow dish of water inside the tank. The parent will deposit the tadpoles into the water, at which point you can move them to their grow-out setup.

Stage 2: Raising Tadpoles
Once eggs hatch in the deli cup, fill it halfway with spring water and add a small Indian almond leaf. Java moss is a great addition if you have it โ it provides cover, surface area for biofilm, and a natural food source. We typically keep tadpoles in this setup for about a week before moving to the next stage, which depends on the species.
Communal Raising
For species that tolerate being raised together (such as many Dendrobates and Epipedobates), tadpoles go directly into a 10-gallon aquarium with a sponge filter. Substrate isn't strictly required, but we like to use about 1 inch of Fluval Stratum, which allows us to plant small aquatic plants. Floating plants add cover and help with water quality. A turtle ramp or cork bark ramp gives morphing froglets a way to exit the water when the time comes. We keep these tanks at room temperature with no additional heater and have had excellent results.

Individual Raising
Some species are cannibalistic and must be raised individually โ Oophaga and many Ranitomeya fall into this category. For individual raising, we use 32oz fruit fly cups. Each cup gets a small piece of cork bark as a floating platform, a piece of Indian almond leaf, and some java moss. Once the tadpole develops back legs, tilt the cup slightly so one side is shallower, making it easier for the froglet to crawl out when it's ready.
In-Tank Raising
In-tank raising โ where tadpoles develop entirely within the parents' vivarium โ sounds ideal, but it comes with a significant catch: when a clutch of froglets morphs out simultaneously in a well-planted, established tank, catching 15 tiny froglets is a serious challenge. We reserve in-tank raising for select species including Oophaga, certain Ranitomeya, and our Mantella laevigata.
Tadpole Diet
Most dart frog tadpoles are omnivorous and will accept a variety of foods. Our go-to tadpole foods include:
- Tadpole bites โ a purpose-formulated sinking pellet
- Fish pellets โ small, high-protein sinking pellets work well
- Java moss โ provides biofilm and grazing material
- Indian almond leaves โ release tannins that benefit water quality and provide leaf skeletons to graze on
- Algae โ naturally occurring in established tanks; tadpoles will graze on it readily
Feed small amounts and remove any uneaten food promptly to maintain water quality.
Water Quality
Water quality is one of the most debated topics in dart frog keeping, and for good reason โ it directly impacts tadpole survival. Here's our approach:
- Communal tanks with filtration: A sponge filter keeps the water clean and oxygenated. We typically don't perform water changes until all tadpoles have morphed out, as the established biological filter handles waste effectively.
- Individual cups: Without filtration, waste builds up quickly. We perform 50% water changes every 10โ14 days using spring water at the same temperature as the cup to avoid shocking the tadpole.
- Water type: We use spring water exclusively. Tap water treated with dechlorinator can work, but spring water is the safest and most consistent option.
Stage 3: Froglet Care
The moment a froglet fully morphs out โ four legs, no tail, ready for land โ is one of the most exciting moments in dart frog keeping. It's also the beginning of a critical period where proper care makes all the difference.
Froglet Housing
We keep it simple for froglet grow-outs. Our setup uses 20QT gasket tubs with a 2-inch screen vent for airflow, a layer of sponge filter media on the bottom (which holds moisture and provides a soft, clean surface), and 1โ2 inches of oak leaf litter on top. We add a few coco huts for hides, some artificial vines for climbing, and โ critically โ a well-established microfauna culture of springtails and dwarf white isopods.

The microfauna is not optional โ it's essential. Springtails and dwarf white isopods provide a constant supply of tiny prey items that newly morphed froglets can find and eat on their own, even between scheduled feedings. A well-seeded grow-out tub dramatically improves froglet survival rates.
Froglet Diet
Newly morphed froglets are tiny and need appropriately sized food. Our priority is to get froglets onto melanogaster fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) as quickly as possible. Melanogaster are small enough for even the tiniest froglets to eat, and โ crucially โ they can be dusted with vitamin and mineral supplements, which is essential for proper bone development and long-term health.
We've noticed significantly faster growth in froglets that transition to fruit flies early. Dust every feeding with a quality vitamin/mineral supplement, rotating between a calcium-only supplement and a multivitamin to avoid over-supplementation.
Grow-Out Management
We can house up to 10 smaller froglets per grow-out tub for several months, depending on species size. The simple setup makes it easy to spot-check animals, remove froglets that are ready to move on, and clean the tub between cohorts. Watch closely for any animals that appear thin or lethargic โ separate them immediately and evaluate their feeding and health.
