Housing Your Isopods

Isopods are adaptable and can be housed in a variety of containers, but we've found that Sterilite latch boxes work exceptionally well. They're affordable, widely available, have smooth sides that prevent escapes, and the latching lids keep humidity in while allowing you to open and close the enclosure easily. The size of the container depends on your colony size โ€” start smaller and upgrade as the colony grows.

Substrate: A mix of coconut fiber or peat moss forms the base of a great isopod substrate. This holds moisture well without becoming waterlogged. On top of the base, we add a generous layer of leaf litter, which serves as both food and hiding cover. Leaf litter is one of the most important elements of an isopod enclosure โ€” don't skip it.

Layout: Our standard setup dedicates about one quarter of the enclosure to sphagnum moss and the remaining three quarters to leaf litter. This creates a natural moisture gradient โ€” the moss side stays damper, while the leaf litter side stays drier โ€” allowing isopods to self-regulate their hydration. We place cork flats throughout the enclosure to give isopods their favorite hiding spots and resting places.

Ventilation: We add a single 1-inch insect vent to each enclosure. This provides enough airflow to prevent stagnant, overly humid conditions without drying the enclosure out too quickly. Good ventilation is key to preventing mold and bacterial overgrowth.

Feeding Your Isopods

Isopods are detritivores, meaning they naturally feed on decaying organic matter. In captivity, this translates to a varied diet that keeps them healthy and reproducing well. Our go-to foods include:

Always remove uneaten fresh food within a day or two to prevent mold. Dry foods like fish flakes and Repashy can be left longer. A varied diet leads to faster reproduction and healthier, more colorful isopods.

Humidity and Water

Isopods need moisture to breathe and thrive, but too much humidity can cause mold, bacterial blooms, and die-offs. The key is maintaining a moisture gradient rather than keeping the entire enclosure uniformly wet.

We manage humidity through weekly mistings of the sphagnum moss section only. This keeps the moss damp and provides the moisture isopods need without saturating the entire substrate. The leaf litter side stays relatively dry, giving isopods the option to move away from moisture when they want to.

Never mist the entire enclosure to the point of saturation. If you see condensation on the walls for more than a few hours after misting, you're adding too much water. Proper ventilation combined with targeted misting is the winning formula.

Breeding Isopods

One of the best things about isopods is how readily they breed when conditions are right. Isopods reproduce sexually โ€” despite a common misconception, they are not hermaphroditic. Males and females mate, and females carry fertilized eggs in a brood pouch (called a marsupium) on their underside until the eggs hatch. The young, called mancae, emerge looking like tiny versions of the adults and begin feeding immediately.

To maximize breeding success:

  • Maintain consistent humidity with a proper moisture gradient
  • Provide abundant leaf litter and hiding spots โ€” stressed isopods don't breed well
  • Feed a varied, protein-rich diet to support egg production
  • Keep temperatures in the 70โ€“80ยฐF range for most temperate species (tropical species may prefer slightly warmer)
  • Avoid disturbing the enclosure too frequently โ€” isopods breed best when left alone

With the right setup, a small starter colony of 10โ€“20 isopods can grow into hundreds within a few months. Patience and consistency are the keys.
